Strategies to try with children at school to build confidence and self esteem

Try these with children at school and see if you notice any changes in them:

• Provide opportunities to make choices wherever possible throughout the day, no matter how small; for example, writing with a pen or a pencil so they feel they have a voice and their opinions are important.
• Identify positive aspects of who they are and how they behave; for example, ‘You were really kind when you held the door open for me.’
• Acknowledge and praise them for their achievements and successes no matter how small.
• Introduce emotional vocabulary to them; for example, ‘It can make us feel proud when we do something well.’
